Agricultural Development Officer (ADO)

We are seeking an experienced and result-oriented professional for the position of Agricultural Development Officer (ADO) in the Sustainable Intensification Program (SIP).
The position will be based in Barisal.

Main duties and responsibilities:
  • Support field cropping systems agronomist with the preparation of experimental fields, planting, harvesting and general management of experiments
  • Makes measurements in the filed with scientific instruments and also takes samples of plants and soils according to experimental plan and protocols
  • Makes sure farmers follow the experimental plan (irrigation, nutrient management, plant protection)
  • Collects data on land use and field boundaries with the aid of a GPS and satellite imagery
  • Reports any abnormal situations to the manager
  • Enters experimental data into computer
  • Manages, documents and properly archives experimental data
A. Position Specific:
  • Demonstrated experience with farmer participatory research and management of on-farm field trials with a particular exphasis on crop management in rice, wheat, or maize-based cropping systems in Bangladesh
  • Familiar with field operations for crop management
  • Good communication skills for interaction with both male and female farmers, outreach professionals, and service providers
  • Ability to operate Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft products
  • Should be able to drive motorcycles and have a valid driving license for the same
  • Ability to interact and collaborate with a broad range of public and private sector and NGO partners
B. Education & Knowledge: Minimum Formal Education needed
  • Masters’ Degree in Agronomy or Agricultural Engineer.
  • Proven English Language skills (IELTS results preferred, with a minimum score of 7 across all bands is preferable)
C. Work Experience Required & Number of years of relevant experience needed
  • 1 year working in agricultural research.

Vacancy Announcement
Solidaridad (www.solidaridadnetwork.org) is an international civil society organization with more than 45 years of global experience is facilitating responsible food production to feed the growing world population. Working across 56 countries through 10 Regional Excellence Centers, Solidaridad invests in farms and land-use approaches to serve the twin goals of increasing production and conserving ecosystems. Solidaridad’s work is characterized by engaging at every stage in the supply chain, from farmer to consumer. To do this, Solidaridad works with farmers in developing countries as well as improving global supply chains.
Solidaridad, with support from the Embassy of the Kingdom of Netherlands (EKN), is implementing the Sustainable Agriculture, Food Security and Linkages (SaFaL) project since November 2012 in the southwest Bangladesh. SaFaL is supporting 57,000 smallholder farm households, disadvantaged landless workers for adoption of sustainable value chain-based farming practices in three sub sectors (livestock, aquaculture and horticulture).
SNA is seeking the following positions for its Bangladesh Country Program in Khulna.

Infrastructure Specialist (1 position)    

The Infrastructure Specialist is entrusted with overall responsibility to develop Village Super Markets (VSM) in strategic locations, in and around the remote rural communities to create sustainable access to markets and fair price of products for rural poor and smallholder farmers. S/he will be responsible for overall supervision and quality assurance of VSM constructions. S/he will be responsible for conducting feasibility study to select potential areas for construction of VSMs to develop integrated and sustainable value chain of agricultural produces. The Infrastructure Specialist will design the market infrastructure in a way that will function as a rural economic hub, and that is environmentally sustainable and culturally acceptable in the context of rural southwest Bangladesh.  S/he will develop coordination with relevant stakeholders for investment and management of marketing infrastructure in the rural communities. S/he will work closely with the agricultural experts, and super market and distribution specialists to identify market challenges and opportunities to promote fair price of produces, shelf life, food safety, packaging, processing and Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) requirements.
Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with Dutch and other international designers and lead locally the design and construction of market places (VSMs) those will work as local economic hubs for marketing of agricultural produces, provide access to quality nutritious food and agricultural inputs, and dispense for all sorts of livelihood information and health services for the communities. This will include communication, coordination and supervision of sub-contractors, local ownership creation, government approval, and land acquisition from the government/communities;
  • Develop technological facilities for providing production technical information to the farmers in getting timely access to information on new technologies and best practices, agricultural inputs and market price;
  • In coordination with local government bodies and other relevant stakeholders improve rural communication to reduce product transaction costs, reduce post-harvest losses and enhance food safety;
  • Develop coordination and partnership among public-private and CSOs to disseminate environment and early warning information;
  • Develop mechanisms within VSMs so that those are being used as shelter and protection of household assets during disaster;
  • Ensure that gender and social inclusion concept and principles are internalized and promoted in infrastructure development and equal access to environment and early warning;
  • Take part in process documentation, collection and compilation of required information from the entrepreneurs and stakeholders.
  • Take part in sharing the experience and results at review meetings within program team and wider stakeholders.

Duration of Initial Contract:

  • Initially 01 (One) year, renewable upon satisfactory performance and availability of funds

Qualifications

  • Has extensive experience of the civil engineering and technologies of the rural infrastructure and communications, agriculture value chains infrastructure design and systems as well as technologies
  • Minimum of 8 years relevant working experience in the similar field
  • Advance degree in infrastructure design design/environment filed;
  • Understanding of rural infrastructure subsectors and their elements
  • Knowledge of the information communication technologies that can be used for market system development
  • Ability to communicate ideas effectively, and to write clearly and concisely.
  • Fluency (both written and oral) in both Bengali and English;
